  1. Mark your calendars for the Haddam Historical Society-Thankful Arnold House Museum Fall House Tour scheduled for October 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Haddam Historical Society will host “Fresh Faces, Old Places: The Next Generation of Historic House Owners.” According to a Facebook post about the event, guests will get the unique chance to visit six architecturally distinct properties in Haddam and Higganum, which are loved and respected by their young owners. These old house champions have carefully restored and curated their historic dwellings to fit varied lifestyles including young families to tech- savvy entrepreneurs. Some have been saved from the brink of destruction and others have been carefully rehabilitated to fit modern lifestyles. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 day of the tour and will be on sale at the end of the summer." (Haddam Historical Society-Thankful Arnold House Museum via Facebook)
  2. With federal funding in the amount of a reported $200,000 the state of Connecticut will be improving its ferry services. According to a CT Insider article, currently, "the state Department of Transportation owns and operates two seasonal ferries across the Connecticut River. One ferry goes between Rocky Hill and Glastonbury, while the other travels between Chester and Hadlyme. The funding typically goes to constructing ferry boats, terminals and ferry maintenance facilities. The funds can also go toward transit vehicles such as buses and shuttles to transport passengers, according to the Federal Highway Administration." (CT Insider)
  3. While reported COVID-19 cases in the state were similar to levels from a week ago, hospitalizations continued to increase. According to an article written by Patch staffer Rich Scinto, "Connecticut reported 4,798 cases over seven days Thursday and a positive test rate of 11.75 percent. There were 4,789 cases reported in last week's report and a positive test rate of 11.79 percent. The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 increased by a net of 24 patients to 352 since last Thursday. The state also reported another 28 deaths, bringing the state total up to 11,130." From my notebook:

  • Connecticut Draft Horse Rescue: "If you thought Tinker couldn't be any cuter or more handsome - well, surprise! Tinker has one blue eye and one brown eye. In horses, a blue colored eye is referred to as a wall eye." (Connecticut Draft Horse Rescue via Facebook)
  • Goodspeed Musicals: We're thrilled to announce that Kate Baldwin will play Dorothy Brock and Max von Essen will play Julian Marsh in Goodspeed's upcoming production of "42nd Street!" (Goodspeed Musicals via Facebook)
  • Connecticut Draft Horse Rescue: "A favorite thing at the rescue is hosting private group tours for community organizations. This week we opened our gates to the Time Out Foundation, an organization that combines the unique healing qualities of horses and the wild outdoors with therapeutic mentoring and counseling to make a difference in the lives of children and adults. Located on a 35-acre farm in Lakeview, CT, the organization offers equine-assisted therapy and horse care, wilderness-based therapeutic mentoring, alternative education intervention, counseling, volunteerism, and horseback riding lessons for all ages and levels." (Connecticut Draft Horse Rescue via Facebook)
  • Killingworth Volunteer Fire Co.: "Thank you to everyone who came out to support Killingworth Fire Company on Saturday July 30 and bought t-shirts and hats and gave generous donations. We will be having another t-shirt sale to continue to celebrate our 75th anniversary on Aug. 13 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Killingworth Transfer Station. We will be selling t-shirts in a variety of different sizes as well as hats for $20 cash. We hope to see you there but if you can't make it, we will be at the artisan market at Parmalee Farm on Sept. 10 from 10 a.m.to 4 p.m. next to the Fire Company food booth.
