Old Lyme Veterinary Hospital: Important Info For Chicken Owners

The state vet has been monitoring the wild bird flu.

Press release from Old Lyme Veterinary Hospital:

March 7, 2022

The state vet has been monitoring the wild bird flu. It has been found in many states, as far away as Michigan and along the northeast flyway as close as the bird flies, as Old Lyme is from Groton, right across the sound in Long Island.

We are encouraged to keep birds away from wild ducks and geese and their droppings. Outdoor access for poultry should be limited at this time.

Signs of illness are listed here at the Connecticut Department of Public Health's pandemic flu webpage and USDA’s Bird Flu website:

This is just for our poultry patients. It is not a cause for alarm.

The state vet reminds us that:

Avian influenza does not present an immediate public health concern. No human cases of these avian influenza viruses have been detected in the United States. As a reminder, the proper handling and cooking of poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165˚F kills bacteria and viruses.
