Carts Approved For Town Of West Hartford-Owned Golf Course

The West Hartford Town Council has approved a plan to have golf carts available at the shorter, executive course owned by the town.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Taking out the golf clubs and swinging away in 2025 is still, at least, a couple of months away.

But when the time comes to yell 'fore," one West Hartford golf course will now have golf carts to use for those who need to use them.

The town-owned Buena Vista Golf Course at 37 Buena Vista Road, West Hartford, is considered a short course at nine holes and 1,832 total yards long.

As a result, there are no golf carts available at the course, unlike the larger town-owned course, Rockledge Golf Club.

But, town officials said, there have been complaints from many golfers about the lack of carts at Buena Vista, especially for the elderly or those with physical mobility issues.

That will change this spring, as the town has agreed to purchase four golf carts to be used by golfers this year.

Last month, the West Hartford Town Council unanimously approved a resolution allowing the town to utilize trust funds to purchase four used carts for a total of $12,450.

"The Buena Vista course is in need of golf carts to address requests from seniors and players with physical handicaps," wrote West Hartford Town Manager Rick Ledwith to the council. "More than 14,500 rounds of golf have been played there in 2024."

Golf cart funds will come from the C.F. Morway Trust Fund, which was set up years ago to benefit Town of West Hartford recreation interests, namely equipment and facility improvements.

Council members in December approved the necessary financial transfers to allow the town to acquire the carts.

Ledwith said his office has been on the receiving end of multiple complaints about the lack of golf carts at Buena Vista.

"This year, particularly, we had a number of requests that actually made it to my office for additional support at the Buena Vista Golf Course, particularly, from older adults and folks that have limitations in terms of moving around," Ledwith said at the Dec. 10 council meeting.

"This will be a benefit to everyone who uses Buena Vista, particularly for those with mobility issues," said Councilperson Debra Polun, who heads the subcommittee that passed the resolution to the full board.

Added West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor: "It's a great use of funds here, so I'm sure it will be appreciated."
