West Hartford's emergency management office is urging residents to prepare for possible flooding on Monday afternoon/evening.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — The West Hartford Office of Emergency Management is advising residents that the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for July 14 for the Hartford County area.

Slow-moving thunderstorms may bring heavy rain this afternoon and evening and could cause some localized flooding.

Residents are asked to make sure to monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible localized flooding conditions.

Here are some reminders on how to prepare and prevent flooding:

  • Make sure downspouts on your home are clear and water is directed away from the foundation.
  • Rake debris away from storm drains.
  • Secure loose items that are in your yard.
  • Keep valuables on high shelves when storing materials in basements or in areas that are prone to flooding. Do this before the storm.
  • Stay out of basements when they become flooded.
  • Never drive into standing water or go around road-closure signs.
  • Walking or playing in flood waters is dangerous. The water can be contaminated with sewage, and sewer covers can become displaced, creating a drowning hazard.
  • Report flooding of drains and streets as soon as possible. Call 860-523-5203.
  • Make sure you are prepared in case you lose power.
  • Stay off bridges over fast-moving water.
