"For the last 10 years, many Elmwood businesses, along with more than 50 residents, community groups, and friends, have actively supported the Elmwood Blooms project," wrote Hartford-based KNOX, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping urban areas improve the local horticultural landscape.

KNOX is asking for folks in the community to donate to the cause, allowing them to fill planters left outside businesses with colorful and seasonal plantings.

"If you live in Elmwood or are a 'Friend of Elmwood' and are able, please send in your contribution today and join Elmwood businesses in making our neighborhood more attractive," wrote organizers.

"Planters will be distributed to the businesses and along New Britain Avenue."

Last year, according to KNOX, nearly 50 residents and Friends of Elmwood contributed between $25 and $250. Many Elmwood merchants purchased one or more planters.

Folks can mail checks by May 6 (made out to KNOX Inc.) to: Jason Carl, Director of Landscape Operations, KNOX, Inc., 75 Laurel St., Hartford, CT 06106.
