Top-Notch Summer Hoops Returns To West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Like seeing basketball played at a high level?

There is perhaps no better way to spend part of your summer than attending the 2025 Basketball Capital Pro-Am Summer League.

And this year, for the third year in a row, it is being played at the University of Saint Joseph, 1678 Asylum Ave., West Hartford, in a modern gym named after a Connecticut hoops icon.

Starting Sunday, June 29, the league features a mix of professionals and amateurs (hence the "pro-am" portion of the title), usually college players and NBA G League players, and pros who play overseas.

Three times a week, USJ's James A. Calhoun Gymnasium will host doubleheaders (games are at 5 and 7 p.m.) featuring top talent looking to work on their game in the offseason.

Known as the University of Connecticut's hall-of-fame coach (and three-time national title winner), Calhoun also founded the USJ's men's basketball program when the school went co-ed in 2018.

The regular season lasts through July, with the playoffs beginning on Friday, Aug. 1, culminating with a championship game on Friday, Aug. 8.

Teams have sponsors and wear uniforms specific to them. For example, the iconic Hartford Yard Goat logo adorns the green uniforms of the team it sponsors.

Overall, the league itself has several corporate sponsors, with Hartford Healthcare, again, being the main sponsor.

Opening night this Sunday should be especially fun, with giveaways and other events taking place in the gym.

Even better? All games are free. There is no admission charge. Fans just need to pass through a security checkpoint (just like any sporting event) and go inside and relax.

Even better, Part 2? The James A. Calhoun Gymnasium is air conditioned (As in very, very cool), making the summer league a great place to cool off with some hot basketball action.
