WEST HARTFORD, CT — Dog lovers bringing their canine pals to the temporary West Hartford Dog Park might want to bring more than their leashes.

That's because the West Hartford Animal Control Department this week has announced they will be a regular visitor of the facility at 100 Mayflower St. to ensure the rules are being followed.

Namely, staffers will be checking to see if pooches there have had their rabies shots, are licensed and owners properly remove "their dog litter."

"These are all requirements to use the dog park. Please be prepared to show proof of rabies and your dog license," wrote the West Hartford Animal Control Department Tuesday.

"This is a great opportunity to allow dogs time off leash to run and have fun. We just wanted to let everyone know we will be at the new dog park as much as possible.

"We appreciate everyone’s cooperation to make this park successful and safe for all."

Last month, the West Hartford Plan & Zoning Commission voted in favor of a special permit to operate the park, which is behind the old St. Brigid School, now owned by the town.

The application was filed by David Coleman and Pamela Hershinson, who serve as co-presidents of the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition, an organization looking for a permanent dog park site.

Currently, the St. Brigid School parcel will be home to a new community/senior center and library, and eventual construction of that project is a main reason why this is a temporary location for now.

The coalition is looking for a permanent location in town, possible at the current address once the construction project is finished.
