WEST HARTFORD/BLOOMFIELD, CT — This time of year, it seems like there are a lot of illnesses to be concerned with, from COVID to the flu to the common cold.

But the West-Hartford Bloomfield Health District is warning residents about another illness, offering up some defense to keep folks safe ... hepatitis.

Hepatitis B is a contagious virus that affects the liver.

It can cause short-term illness, but in many cases it leads to chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis, liver failure, or liver cancer.

The virus spreads through contact with infected blood or body fluids, which means many people may be at risk without realizing it.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all adults ages 19–59, and for adults 60 and older who have risk factors for Hepatitis B infection.
