West Hartford Reminder: Clear Your Sidewalks

With the first measurable snow of the season expected today, the town has reminded residents of the requirements in place due to the storm.

Town of West Hartford

WEST HARTFORD — With snow in the forecast, the West Hartford Department of Public Works reminds residents, owners, or occupants that they must remove snow and ice from premises with an established sidewalk.

And they must be done so within 12 hours after a storm ends or within 12 hours after sunrise, whichever is later.

The entire walk must be cleared, including curb cuts, handicapped ramps, and bus stop pads.

Clearing snow and ice from heavily used sidewalks near schools, public buildings, and commercial areas is particularly important. Sidewalks should be sanded whenever ice cannot be removed.

Violators are subject to a per-day fine plus liability for the cost of clearing the sidewalk, if necessary, per Town Ordinance 115-24.

Violations may be reported to the West Hartford Police Department at 523-5203.

It is also illegal to put snow into the street.

"You can help West Hartford achieve its Vision Zero goal of eliminating fatalities and severe injuries on West Hartford streets by doing your part to keep our roads safe," wrote the town.

Trash collection continues

All American Waste will continue to collect trash and recyclables, even in snow, except in severe weather.

Place barrels near the sidewalk and away from the edge of the road. (Do not place them into the roadway.)

After the barrels have been emptied, please remove them promptly.

Clear around hydrants

Help the West Hartford Fire Department and protect neighboring properties by shoveling around fire hydrants.
