WEST HARTFORD, CT — The newly dedicated West Hartford Dog Park is proving to be dog-sized success in town, providing canines and their owners with a nice place to enjoy the outdoors.

Last Saturday, local dignitaries — were on hand for an official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the "temporary" location.

Earlier this week, meanwhile, the West Hartford Animal Control Department reported folks are abiding by park rules and being good users of the new facility.

While the park was dedicated Nov. 5, it actually opened up at the end of October after the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition received necessary approvals from the town.

"For the last couple weekends we’ve been stopping over to the new dog park," wrote West Hartford Animal Control via social media.

"Each time we visit the dog park we’ve had a great time meeting all the 4-legged and 2-legged visitors. We appreciate everyone complying with rabies and dog license requirements."

The park, which is open every day from sunrise to sunset, is considered temporary because it will need to close approximately in one year when construction begins on the new community center and library at the site.

It is located at 100 Mayflower St. (behind the old St. Brigid School site, where the new library and community center will go).

The coalition is looking for a permanent site, with the current location one possibility once library/community center construction is complete.
