3/28: An elderly man caused significant damage to his Nissan sedan after he rear-ended a Toyota SUV in front of Precision Performance, located on Danbury Road, police said. Apparently the SUV had been stopped in order to make a left hand turn, when it was struck from behind. Police said that the driver of the Nissan, a 94-year-old New Canaan man identified as Howard Schweibert, stepped out of the vehicle after the airbags had deployed. He apparently surveyed the damage to the front of his sedan—which was significant, according to police—and then, seeing no other car around him, he stepped back into his car and continued driving, police said. Apparently the driver of the SUV, Carol Dreska, of Sherman, had turned off the road to get out of traffic and the elderly man did not realize this, police said. Police said they stopped Schweibert down the road. He was ultimately given an infraction for following too close and his license was taken and given to the DMV for a re-testing evaluation, according to police. Dreska was taken to the hospital for non-specified injuries, reports read.
