Party Affiliation: Democrat
Occupation: Real Estate Attorney (40+ years)
Family: I have been married for 41 years and have one daughter, who now lives in Concord, MA with her 8 year old daughter. My immediate family also includes three stepchildren, six additional grandchildren, and two great grandsons. Large family gatherings are a common joyful happening at our house.
Does anyone in your family work in politics or government? No
Previous public office, appointive or elective: No
Why are you seeking this office? I am seeking a position on the Zoning Board of Appeals because I appreciate that local governments must rely on individuals with relevant expertise to serve on their boards and commissions. My background in real estate law equips me with the experience necessary to analyze and make decisions that are crucial for the board’s functions.
The single most pressing issue facing my constituents is ____, and this is what I intend to do about it: It is critical that residents of the Town trust the integrity and transparency of their Boards and Commissions. That trust is being eroded. The most important thing I could do at the Zoning Board of Appeals is to join forces with the other members of the Board to provide a venue where property owners can count on thoughtful, fair and well-reasoned deliberations and decisions that are based on sound interpretations of governing law.
What are the major differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post? I graduated from Yale Law School in 1983 and have been practicing law in CT and NY with a focus on real estate matters ever since. I have extensive experience representing commercial and residential property owners in multiple settings, including before zoning boards of appeal, and believe that my background will enhance my ability to make thoughtful, fair and well-reasoned decisions based on governing laws and principles.
What other issues do you intend to address during your campaign? I will try to improve the general understanding of the purposes and functions of the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA). The ZBA reviews applications for variances due to unique land hardships and hears appeals related to zoning enforcement or Special Exception requests. The ZBA is not a policy-setting body; its decisions are strictly based on relevant laws and regulations. Ensuring fair and well-reasoned decisions helps maintain applicants’ trust in the process.
What accomplishments in your past would you cite as evidence you can handle this job? My experience as a real estate attorney has prepared me for this position.
What is the best advice anyone ever gave you? Be kind, be prepared, and be useful.
