Two CT Burgers Named Among Nation's Best

You can find a great burger almost anywhere nationwide, but two Connecticut burgers have been voted among the nation's best.

Everyone has their own opinion on their favorite burgers. Much like a blank canvas, burgers can be made with a variety of cheese and meats tailored to one's liking. However, a major travel website named two burgers in Connecticut among the best in the country.

Food and Wine Magazine recently named Meriden-based Ted's steam cheeseburger and Louis' Lunch of New Haven's The Original Burger among the best burgers in the nation. Louis' Lunch came in at No. 17 and Ted's came in at No. 22.

Many restaurants claim to be the birthplace of the hamburger. Louis’ Lunch, in New Haven, Connecticut, since 1900, is a leading contender. The meaty hand-shaped patties are grilled on antique cast-iron broilers over an open flame," Food and Wine Magazine wrote of Louis' Lunch's The Original Burger.

Widely regarded as the birthplace of the hamburger, The Library of Congress declared in 2016 that Louis' Lunch served up the first hamburger and steak sandwich in U.S. history 100 years ago. U.S. Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro, D-3, pushed for the honor.

If you're not familiar with the history of Louis' Lunch, you should know they are the originators of doing it their way. There are no condiments allowed on their burgers, just a choice of onion, tomato, and cheese. That's it.

Ted's is also famous for its steamed cheeseburgers, made with Vermont Cheddar.
