Wilton Police Launch Safety Vest Program To Protect Pedestrians, Runners And Cyclists

Wilton police will distribute reflective vests to enhance safety for walkers, runners, and cyclists on local roads.

WILTON, CT — The Wilton Police Department will begin distributing high-visibility safety vests to pedestrians, runners and cyclists as part of a new safety initiative funded by a state transportation grant.

The effort is supported by the Connecticut Department of Transportation’s 2025 Active Transportation Microgrant Program, which aims to make streets safer and more accessible for non-motorized travel. Wilton police used the funds to purchase 100 reflective vests to improve the visibility of people sharing the road with vehicles.

According to state data, there were 1,655 pedestrian and cyclist-related crashes in Connecticut in 2024, resulting in 72 deaths. Wilton recorded four pedestrian crashes that year.

The department said patrol officers will carry the vests in their cruisers and provide them directly to people they encounter who may benefit from additional visibility while walking, biking or running. The vests feature bright colors and reflective strips designed to increase safety, particularly in low-light conditions.

Residents interested in obtaining a vest proactively may contact Deputy Chief Robert Cipolla by email at Robert.Cipolla@wiltonct.gov or by phone at 203-563-0254.
