Wiltonian Scores Game-Winning, First-Career Goal for Syracuse Women's Soccer

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Wilton's Lauren DeCarlo netted her first career goal in the 86th minute to give the Syracuse women’s soccer team (2-3-3, 1-1) a 1-0 victory against Providence (3-3-4, 1-1) at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday.

A sophomore defender, DeCarlo scored from the right side of the box, lifting the Orange to its first Big East win of the season.

DeCarlo has apeared in four games this season for Syracuse, starting against Fairfield and Providence.

A 2010 graduate of Wilton, DeCarlo earned all-FCIAC honors as a senior when she scored 12 goals. She was a member of the Warriors' state championship teams in 2006 and 2008.

Syracuse dominated the second half Sunday as it created several quality scoring opportunities. Sophomore Cecilia Borgstrom hit the post with her shot in the 58th minute, and sophomore Rachel Blums shot on a corner kick went high in the 82nd minute.

The Orange finally broke through 3:07 remaining in regulation. Sophomore Brittany Kinmond crossed the ball from the left into the box, where junior Brielle Heitman headed the ball to DeCarlo on the right side of the box.

DeCarlo, who had entered the game just minutes before after Casey Ramirez was removed after a collision with a Providence player, put her shot past Friars’ goalkeeper Caitlin Walker to give Syracuse the lead.

The Friars earned a corner kick in the 88th minute, but Orange goalkeeper Brittany Anghel secured the ball on the kick to secure the victory.

Syracuse proved to be the more dangerous team in the first half. In the 15th minute, Borgstrom played the ball across the box to Ramirez, whose header went wide.

Junior Alyscha Mottershead had a chance to put Syracuse on the scoreboard in the 19th minute, but her header off a corner kick went just over the crossbar. Borgstrom also had a scoring opportunity when she brought the ball up the left side of the field, but her shot also went wide as the teams were tied, 0-0, at halftime.

The Orange defense limited the Friars to just two shots, both of which came in the first half, while Syracuse’s offense produced 10 shots. The Orange had five corner kicks to four for Providence. Anghel needed to make just one save and recorded her fourth shutout of the season and ninth of her career. Walker finished with two saves for Providence.

Syracuse is back in action at the SU Soccer Stadium next weekend when its hosts Big East foes Georgetown on Friday at 7 p.m. and Villanova on Sunday at 1 p.m.
