Outcome of East Windsor Referendum Still Matters

Regardless of whether the the budget referendum in East Windsor passes on Tuesday, there still will be a 2 percent - or $683,149 - spending increase for the 2013-14 fiscal year.

The Board of Finance sent to voters a third budget of $34.84 million, representing a 2 percent increase over current levels.

The town charter mandates that, should a budget fail to pass by the third referendum, a budget will automatically be adopted with a 2 percent spending increase.

Still, the outcome of the vote is important, according to East Windsor Superintendent of Schools Dr. Theresa Kane.

Kane said that the finance board’s recommendation calls for $20.62 million for schools, representing a 2.2 percent spending increase.

The town budget of $14.22 million will realize a smaller increase.

If the budget is voted down at the referendum, then there will be a 2 percent spending increase across the board, meaning the schools will get $41,000 less than if the budget passes, Kane said.

That is not an insignificant amount of money for a small school district like East Windsor, according to Kane.
