Route 140 In East Windsor Likely Closed For A Week

Route 140 in East Windsor is completely closed as state workers repair the road near the intersection of Route 191.

Connecticut Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Nursick said that the goal is to have the road - which has dropped several inches - repaired by next Monday, June 24.

The decision to completely close the road was made Friday, Nursick said.

Now workers are currently figuring out what's causing the issue, Nursick said.

"Clearly the road is settling," Nursick said. "In the past, we could just shim things up with additional asphalt."

That's not the case here, Nursick said, as something has caused the road to settle more than usual.

Nursick said the thought is it's an underground water issue, though it could be something else, too.

Heavy rains that have fallen recently have likely contributed to the issue, Nursick said.

The DOT issued an emergency declaration, which means the agency can bypass its procurement requirements to get the work done immediately, Nursick said.

There is a detour in place until the road is repaired.

"Obviously it's not ideal, but no matter how you build infrastructure, 99 percent of the time it is resilient to weather issues," Nursick said. "But a lot can go wrong, despite your best efforts."
