Tropical Storm Philippe Has A 50 Percent Chance Of Forming

Forecasters are keeping an eye on the area of low pressure in the Caribbean Sea as it develops.

MIAMI, FL — In a reminder that hurricane season hasn't wrapped up just yet, meteorologists are keeping their eyes on a low-pressure system south of Florida.

The potential tropical storm is brewing in the Caribbean Sea, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported Tuesday morning. The area of low pressure currently hovers near the Central American coast, and it has a 50 percent chance of turning into Tropical Storm Philippe over the next 5 days, the center said.

It could become a tropical storm sooner than that, but forecasters say that's unlikely. The center says there's only a 10 percent chance of it developing into a full-blown tropical storm in the next 48 hours.

As long as the low pressure area stays near land, it is much less likely to develop into a more threatening storm.

In the coming days, it is expected to move north toward the northwestern Caribbean sea.

Jake Dunne of NBC15 News said there's a "really good chance" that even if the area develops into a more severe storm, it won't hit the Gulf Coast.
