43,210 Coronavirus Cases In Florida; 1,875 Deaths

Florida health officials said the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state had risen to 43,210 as of Thursday.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials said the total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state had risen to 43,210 as of Thursday, an increase of 808 new cases over the previous 24-hour period.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Thursday he is allowing the state's two hardest hit counties — Miami-Dade and Broward — to partially reopen restaurants, hair salons, nail salons and barbershops starting Monday amid social distancing and occupancy requirements. Thirteen Florida counties reported a combined total of 39 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period.

Miami-Dade County reported 17 new deaths. Palm Beach County reported nine more deaths.

Lee County and Manatee County each reported three new deaths. Hillsborough County and Pinellas County each reported two more deaths.

Calhoun County reported its first death from the virus. Charlotte County reported one new death as did Collier County, Polk County, Putnam County, St. Johns County and Sumter County.

The total number of deaths reported in the state from the virus rose to 1,875, up from 1,827 a day earlier.

Florida had a 7.1 positive test rate for the virus out of 609,574 tests that had been administered as of Thursday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 7,749 from 7,595 a day earlier.

A total of 25,077 — or some 58 percent of the state's total cases — were in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Miami-Dade reported 14,742 confirmed cases as of Thursday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 6,057 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 4,278 cases. Palm Beach County businesses partially reopened on Monday.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,530 cases as of Thursday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,577 cases.
