5 Things You Need To Know Today: February 8

Improvements coming to McKechnie Field, Greek Festival set to begin Thursday and a public hearing on a proposed 13th Avenue urban grocery store is set for next week.

1. The City Council meets today at 8:30 a.m. to discuss a plan to renovate McKechnie Field a day after County commissioners approved the plan.

2. The 28th Annual Greek Glendi Festival opens Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church, 7671 N. Lockwood Ridge Road. One of the biggest draws — the food — features all the classic Greek recipes such as Souvlaki, Spanakopita, Lamb Shanks, Moussaka, Gyros and, new this year, Dolmathes, meat and rice stuffed grape leaves. In addition, expect a wide variety of the most popular Greek coffees, wines and pastries. The ELLADA Band will provide traditional Greek music throughout the festival. Hellenic Folk Dancers will entertain the crowd with traditional Greek dancing dressed in traditional costumes.

3. Columbus Crew will square off against Swedish pro team Malmö FF in a scrimmage today at 10:30 a.m. on Field 1 of the . Both teams have been training at IMG Academies to prepare for their respective seasons. The public is welcome to attend the event.

4. The Downtown Bradenton Craft Festival will line the waterfront on 1st Avenue aka Barcarotta Boulevard in downtown Bradenton with some of the country's best crafters from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Crafters and artists will ofer a wide range of  unique jewelry, pottery, handmade crafts, paintings and more ranging in price from $3 to $3,000.

5. The Bradenton Central Community Redevelopment Agency will hold a public hearing on a proposed Urban Format Grocery Store to be located at 13th Avenue West and 1st Street. The town hall meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 15, in the City Hall Council Chambers, 101 Old Main St. The public may review the proposed Urban Format Grocery Store from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday at City Hall.
