FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Bail has been set at $360,000 for a 19-year-old man accused of attempting to flee the scene of an early morning April 2019 crash that resulted in the death of a 9-year-old Bradenton girl.

Carlos Jeovany Gutierrez appeared in a Broward County courtroom Wednesday in connection with the April 17, 2019 crash that took the life of Eymi Tatiana Aguilera Torres, who was thrown from her family's 2004 Chevrolet Blazer on Interstate 75, about six miles east of County Road 833 in an unincorporated area of Broward County.

"We're now almost a year later and based on the severity of this accident, including the death of a 9-year-old, obviously the court has to take take all that into consideration," Broward County Judge Corey Amanda Cawthon told Gutierrez in setting his bail.

Court documents said Gutierrez did not have a valid driver's license at the time of the crash. He was driving his sister's silver G35 Infiniti and was being followed by his girlfriend in a Nissan Versa at the time of the crash.

Torres was pronounced dead at Broward Health Medical Center after being thrown onto the highway.

Gutierrez and his girlfriend were located by Broward sheriff's K-9 officers at a wildlife crossing bridge that was just west of the crash scene.

"When located, the subjects were attempting to conceal themselves in a dense, grassy area with other foliage," court documents said.

The crash occurred in the inside westbound lanes of Interstate 75, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

"The defendant failed to maintain control of his vehicle," according to court documents. "This caused the Infiniti to partially enter the outside lane which was occupied by a 2004 Chevrolet Blazer, tan in color, which was traveling at a slower rate of speed ahead of the defendant."

Court documents said Gutierrez struck the rear of the Blazer.

"This caused the Chevrolet to rotate counter-clockwise and slide to the southwest before becoming overturned," court documents said. "The right rear passenger of the Chevrolet was ejected onto the inside paved shoulder as the Chevrolet overturned."

The Infiniti slid into the path of the blue Nissan Versa that was driven by Gutierrez's girlfriend.

"Carlos Jeovany Gutierrez also failed to remain on scene or render aid to any of the victims of this crash when he fled on foot from the crash scene," court documents said.

Six other people in the tan Blazer with Torres suffered minor injuries while Gutierrez's girlfriend was also injured.

Gutierrez is facing multiple charges, including failure to stop and remain at the scene of an accident involving death and driving with a suspended license.
