Bradenton Hosts Largest Spearfishing Tournament In US

BRADENTON, FL — If you are looking for something to do this weekend, you might want to check out Saturday's weigh-in for what organizers are calling the largest charity spearfishing tournament in the country.
The annual Gene Cloud Memorial Spearfishing Tournament got underway on Friday and will wrap up Saturday at the Bradenton Yacht Club.
The public is invited to attend the weigh-in beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday. The event runs through 6 p.m.

Proceeds benefit the Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital and the Shriners Hospitals. Donations to both hospitals have amounted to more than $72,000.
"This is an exciting tournament," said organizers. "There will be over a hundred divers competing for $14,500 in prize money in addition to prizes."

Organizers said the awards ceremony will take place around 6:30 p.m.
"Many species of fish are included in this tournament," organizers added. "One special category is for lion fish, an invasive species. Hundreds of lion fish will be brought in."
