Bradenton's 5 Things to Know Today: April 20

It's a busy weekend: Gulf Coast Animal League Scavenger Hunt, Relay for Life and a Ware's Creek Clean-up, there are a lot of ways to contribute to the community.

1. Participants in the 15th annual Relay for Life of Bradenton will burn the midnight oil this weekend as they walk toward a cure for cancer at . This year’s , with 40 teams participating to raise money for the American Cancer Society, which invests more than $120 million in cancer research every year. Opening ceremonies take place at 1 p.m. Saturday with the traditional survivor and caregiver victory laps. The Luminaria Ceremony, which honors the community’s cancer survivors and honors those who lost their battle with the disease, takes place at 9 p.m. The event continues until 7 p.m. Sunday.

2. The annual Walter C. Watkins Memorial Scavenger Hunt fundraiser takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All proceeds raised will help fund the Gulf Shore Animal League's Trap-Neuter-Return program allowing the organization to spay/neuter the stray and feral cats in our community as part of the county's  No Kill mission.

3. The Historic Ware’s Creek Neighborhood Association is cleaning Wares Creek from 9 a.m. to noon on Satur­day in con­junction with the Great American Cleanup. Refreshments provid­ed to volunteers who help clean up the creek.

4. Andersen RacePark will host the Florida Karting Championship Series Saturday and Sunday. The series is held at six different tracks throughout the state, the largest karting series in the country.  With over 250 competitors expected this weekend, the racing will be ultra-competitive, with stars of the future battling it out to showcase their talent.  Drivers from as far away as California will be competing at the RacePark this weekend. A 3-day pass is $20, 2-day pass $15 and 1 day pass $10. Parking is free. For more information visit www.andersenracepark.com.  

5. will host its annual “Nolan Night on Main Street” Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nolan Night on Main Street will feature the Band Southern Grace as well as student music performances by the sixth-grade Chorus, Guys and Dolls Jr. Musical Performers and the Nolan Band Ensemble. There will also be bidding on fabulous theme baskets, face painting, games with prizes, "bug " jewelry, good food, good music and fun for everyone.
