Bradenton's 5 Things to Know Today: May 2
Two city roads will be closed in sections today for sewer repairs, the state has begun repairs to the DeSoto Bridge and some of the county's brightest students will be recognized on Thursday.

1. Construction crews are making structural repairs to the , replacing a portion of the bridge deck, and installing pile jackets to protect the bridge piles throughout the summer Most of the bridge construction will occur at night. Motorists should expect some work to close travel lanes from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Expect lane shifts as well. Crews will also be working in the water on some of the bridge pilings. The main channel for boat access remains open but caution should be used when passing by construction barges.
2. Some of Manatee County School District's most accomplished senior students will receive special recognition Thursday when the district hosts its “Academic Achievement Scholarship Signing Day” from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the More than 80 seniors will participate in the event designed to recognize the outstanding academic achievement of the top 10 percent of high school seniors who have signed a letter of intent to accept a non-athletic, academic scholarship to a postsecondary educational institution.
3. Plan for Food and Wine on Pine on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Historic Pine Avenue in Anna Maria that will showcase the area's best in food, wine, art and music. Nearly two dozen independently owned restaurants participate in what is billed as both a culinary and cultural event. Proceeds from the event benefit local art-related charities. 4. Look for a couple of road closures today: 12th Street West from 9th to 11th Avenues West is scheduled to close from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for repair to a sanitary sewer line and 25th Street West from Manatee Avenue West to 6th Avenue West is also scheduled to close from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a sanitary sewer line repair.
5. The is sponsoring an eight week class on how to start and manage a business. The class, which covers a variety of topics from the business plan, marketing, accounting and legal issues, begins on May 10 and will run from 6 p.m. to 9 pm. For more information or to register call 941-747-6797
