Coronavirus Cases Top 29,000 In Florida

The number of coronavirus cases in Florida was up Thursday night.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of coronavirus cases in Florida was up by 1,072 Thursday night over the precious 24-hour period as health officials reported a total of 29,648 confirmed cases throughout the state.

Health officials said there were a total of 987 deaths in the state, up from 960 earlier in the day. Seventeen of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths on Thursday.

Broward County reported 10 new deaths Thursday. Miami-Dade reported 18 new deaths. Palm Beach County reported nine deaths. Collier County reported three more deaths.

Manatee County reported five more deaths. Lake County reported two deaths as did Pinellas County.

Charlotte County reported one new death as did Lee County. Martin County also reported one new death as did Polk County, Brevard County, Hendry County, Osceola County, Sarasota County, Volusia County and St. Lucie County.

The state had a 9.8 percent positive test rate out of total 303,050 tests. Many of Florida's cases have come from 335 long-term elder care facilities. Health officials said those facilities account for 2,481 cases and 271 deaths involving residents or staff.

Miami-Dade reported a total of 10,588 confirmed cases, more than any other county. Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, is considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak along with Broward and Palm Beach. The three counties have accounted for some 60 percent of all of the state's cases.

Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 4,431 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 2,554 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,008cases as of Thursday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,274 cases.
