FL Businesses Reopen From Coronavirus Lockdown; 819 New Cases

Many Florida businesses and restaurants reopened Monday amid tighter social distancing requirements and reduced occupancy.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Many Florida businesses and restaurants reopened Monday amid tighter social distancing requirements and reduced occupancy, as the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state rose by 819 over the previous 24 hours.

With a total of 36,897, cases, the total number of deaths also rose to 1,399. Ten of Florida's 67 counties reported 22 new deaths Monday, including Walton County, which reported its first death.

Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties were temporarily excluded from Monday's partial reopening of businesses. But Florida restaurants and retailers in most parts of the state were given the OK by Gov. Ron DeSantis to reopen, though bars and hair salons will remain closed for the time being. Eighty state-run parks, including some with beaches, also reopened Monday after being shut down since March 23; and elective medical procedures were permitted to resume throughout the state.

Miami-Dade County reported nine new deaths. Broward County reported four more deaths. Hillsborough County reported two new deaths, as did Duval County. Collier County reported one new death, as did Lee, Leon, St. Lucieand Pinellas counties.

Florida reported a total of 6,119 hospitalizations and an 8.3 positive testing rate out of 445,995 tests that had been administered throughout the state.

Miami-Dade reported 13,092 confirmed cases as of Monday, more than any other county. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 5,383 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 3,311 cases. Those three counties account for some 60 percent of all Florida cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,300 cases as of Monday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,438 cases.
