Florida Coronavirus Update: 12,350 Cases, 221 Deaths

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of coronavirus cases in Florida rose to 12,350 Sunday, an increase of 805 cases from the previous evening as the number of deaths jumped from 195 to 221.

The surge in deaths Sunday came primarily from two South Florida counties — Broward, which reported eight new deaths and Palm Beach which reported 14 new deaths. Marion County also reported its first two deaths Sunday.

Florida's total included 1,555 hospitalizations and a positive test rate for the virus of 10.6 percent based on 116,898 tests throughout the state.

Gov. Ron DeSantis has said the state will have achieved a testing rate of one test per 200 residents when the number of tests reached approximately 105,000.

The Florida Department of Health website began showing coronavirus cases by Zip Code over the weekend in the case of Zip Codes where there have been at least five cases.

A Princess Cruises ship with two dead passengers suffering from the new coronavirus was permitted to dock in Miami Saturday and disembarkation continued on Sunday. With 4,146 cases, Miami-Dade County has the most confirmed cases of any of Florida's 67 counties. Broward County, which has a much smaller population than Miami-Dade, has 1,886 cases. Palm Beach County, which is just north of Broward County, has 1,000 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, has 536 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, has 713 cases.
