Gunshot Fired During High School Football Game In Manatee County

Police said a single gunshot was fired following a fight near the sidelines at a football game at Palmetto High School on Wednesday night.

MANATEE COUNTY, FL — A high school football game was disrupted after someone fired a single gunshot. Police are now investigating.

According to police, the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday during a high school football game at Palmetto High School.

Towards the end of the game, police said a group of high school-age people began fighting near the sidelines.

As school staff and police officers moved toward the group to break up the fight, a single gunshot was heard. The group immediately scattered and officers located a handgun on the ground. There were no injuries, police said.

Palmetto police investigators said they have identified a person of interest as the shooter but are not releasing any information pending a positive identification. There were no other arrests made, and the investigation is ongoing.
