Hazardous Weather in the Forecast

is still days away, but the potential for hazardous weather in the form of thunder showers in Manatee and Sarasota counties is more of an immediate concern, say forecasters at the National Weather Service.

A trough of low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will bring showers and thunder showers to Manatee and Sarasota counties today and tonight.

Some of the storms may bring gusting winds and even small hail. There is a potential for flooding and frequent lightning strikes, weather officials warn.

The heavy moisture in the area has created "ideal conditions for very heavy rain," according to forecasters. The public should stay alert to possible flooding of roads and low-lying areas.

“All of the rain we have gotten has caused the rivers to (be near flood stage),” said Nicole Carlisle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Carlisle said the flooding threat doesn’t come from Tropical Storm Isaac. Rather, it’s from a “stalled frontal boundary over us, and we’re expecting more rain today.”
