Man Jumps From Car During Pursuit

Deputies were chasing a car with three suspected gunmen, when one jumped from the car and was hit by a sheriff's vehicle.

A suspect who jumped from a car pursued by Sheriff's detectives is being treated at Blake Medical Center for his injuries. 

Robert Torres, 19, leaped from a car chased by detectives Thursday night and was hit by a Sheriff's car, authorities said.

He was listed in critical condition over night at Blake Medical Center. The latest Sheriff's report stated that he now is in stable condition.

At around 10 p.m. Thursday, deputies in an unmarked patrol car witnessed men shooting from a car near the intersection of 61st Avenue and 5th Street East.

The deputies began chasing the armed men, when several minutes into the pursuit they saw Torres, a passenger in the car, jump from the vehicle.

He hit the front bumper of the Sheriff's vehicle and then rolled underneath the car, according to investigators.

The vehicle with the suspect continued to flee before being stopped by another deputy near the area where the pursuit began at 61st Avenue and 5th Street East.

The driver, whom deputies have not identified, was taken into custody for questioning. A third unidentified person ran from the scene and remains at large.
