Manatee County’s 2017 School Grades Released

The School District of Manatee County earned a B grade from the Florida Department of Education for the 2016-17 academic year.

BRADENTON, FL — For the first time since 2009, not a single school in Manatee County earned a grade from the Florida Department of Education under a D. The School District of Manatee County also saw its overall grade climb from a C to a B.

The Florida Department of Education on Wednesday released the official grades for schools across the state for the 2016-17 academic year. Statewide, the number of schools earning A or B grades rose to 57 percent, up from 46 percent in the 2015-16 academic year.

FDOE said the state’s elementary schools saw the largest percentage point increase in A schools with some 30 percent, or 542 schools, making that grade in 2016-17. The number is up from 386 schools, or 21 percent from 2015-16.

In Manatee County, 81 percent of all district schools earned either A, B or C grades. Overall, the district had 22 schools improve their grades from last year. Tillman Elementary shot up from an F in 2016 to a B in 2017.

“I’m very proud of our students, teachers, faculty, and administrators for their accomplishments,” Superintendent Dr. Diana Greene said in a statement announcing the district's grades. “This is a win for the entire community. It takes all of us working together to improve the lives and education of our children. Although we’re excited, we know that we still have work to do. We’re going to keep rolling up our sleeves and working hard.”

The state’s grades are based on 11 different factors that include student achievement, learning gains statewide, high school graduation rates and standardized tests, among others. Grades are intended to “provide parents and the general public an easily understandable way to measure the performance of a school and understand how well each school is serving its students,” a state media release said.
