New Coronavirus Deaths In Florida Decline For Mother's Day

Florida health officials reported fewer deaths from the new coronavirus on Sunday as Floridians celebrated Mother's Day amid restrictions.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida health officials reported a total of 40,596 confirmed coronavirus cases Sunday, but fewer deaths as Floridians celebrated Mother's Day amid occupancy and social distancing requirements at many restaurants and takeout-only options at others.

Sunday's total includes an additional 595 confirmed cases of the virus in the previous 24-hour period.

But only two of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths over the previous 24-hour period, fewer than in previous weeks. Florida health officials said the number of deaths in the state from the virus stood at 1,721 as of Sunday.

Miami-Dade County reported five new deaths on Sunday. Pinellas County reported one new death.

The state had a 7.5 positive rate for the virus out of 538,948 tests that had been administered as of Sunday. The number of hospitalizations increased in Florida to 7,171 from 7,093 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade reported 14,007 confirmed cases as of Sunday, more than any other county. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 5,858 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 3,870 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,432 cases as of Sunday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,505 cases.
