Rare Fruit Tree Sale Is Sunday

From papayas to persimmons, the Manatee Rare Fruit Council offers a rare opportunity to see and buy unusual fruit trees, bushes and shrubs perfect for Florida gardens and yards.

Red pineapple, lychee and tropical apricot trees are rock stars in the world of Florida landscaping.

So it is no surprise that the Manatee Rare Fruit Council's 25th annual Rare Fruit Tree Sale is expected to attract a line of people around the Bradenton Area Convention Center when it opens at 10 a.m. Sunday. The one-day sale will run until 4 p.m.

The event will feature thousands of plants, trees, vines, shrubs and bushes, from papaya and passion fruit to many varieties of the popular mango and avocado trees, according to Bradenton.com. There also will be cookbooks and honey for sale.

Admission and parking are free, and there will be volunteers to guide people on the best rare fruit tree or plant to purchase.

The Manatee Rare Fruit Council is a nonprofit group, and part of the proceeds from Sunday's sale will help to support its Premier Rare Fruit Tree display at Palma Sola Botanical Park.

If you plan to go to Sunday's sale, it's a good idea to bring a car or wheelbarrow. Wagons are provided, but there are never enough to help everyone after purchases get to vehicles in the parking lot.
