Driver, 83, Killed After Colliding With Tree

The Clearwater man may have suffered a medical injury that caused him to go off the roadway at Belleair Road and Beverly Drive and onto someone's property Monday.

Update, 4:20 p.m.:

The victim in Monday's fatal accident has been identified as John R. Cheesman, 83, of Clearwater, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Next of kin has been notified.

An 83-year-old Clearwater man was killed after his car went off the road and collided with a tree at a home at Belleair Road and Beverly Drive on Monday morning, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

The driver may have suffered a medical injury resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle, an FHP spokesperson said in a media release.

The man was headed eastbound on Belleair approaching Beverly just before noon when his 2002 Chrysler crossed the westbound lanes and went off to the left side of the roadway, according to an accident report. The car continued through the grass shoulder and went through a wooden fence at a home in the 1500 block of Beverly Drive, continuing across the property until finally striking a tree.

The driver has not yet been identified, pending notification of next of kin.

A 76-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, the FHP reported.
