U.S. 41 Trees to Be Saved?

The office of State Sen. John Legg, R-Lutz, says it is tying up loose ends on a deal to save the plantings. Nothing is finalized yet, however.

There is no official update on the fate of the trees planted in the U.S. 41 median through Lutz. However, the office of State Sen. John Legg, R-Lutz, may have found a way to save those crepe myrtles.

“Keep your eyes open the next two weeks,” said Tim Couet, chief legislative aide for Legg. “We should have everything tied up and good to go.”

Couet said “I would be in great error” to discuss the possible solution since nothing has been finalized but “our goal is to keep the trees in the median.”

Lutz residents cried foul early this year when it was revealed Hillsborough county would remove the trees to turn median maintenance back over to the Florida Department of Transportation. Since that agency does not have landscape maintenance funding in its budget, the trees were going to have to be removed.

Following public backlash, the county began working with Legg’s office to find a way to keep plantings in the medians.
