Aventura Police Fire At Man 'In Crisis' During Confrontation

Police fired at a man "in crisis" Sunday after the man allegedly barricaded himself in his apartment and confronted officers with a handgun.

AVENTURA, FL — Police fired at a man "in crisis" Sunday after the man allegedly barricaded himself in his apartment and confronted officers with a handgun, according to Aventura police. The incident happened around 4 p.m. at the Camden Apartments, 3150 NE 190th St.

Police did not immediately identify the man. He received a non-life threatening gunshot wound to his leg and was taken to a local hospital.

"The subject exited his apartment and confronted officers with a handgun," explained Major Michael Bentolila of the Aventura Police Department.

"None of our Officers were injured during this encounter," Bentolila said on Sunday. "Detectives from the Aventura Police Department are investigating the crime scene. This is an ongoing investigation."

Police initially received a call saying that the man was in crisis, according to Bentolila.

"The caller requested for police to respond," he said. When police arrived, the man barricaded himself in his apartment.

"Officers were securing the area and preparing to establish contact and negotiate with the subject," when the man confronted police, Bentolila added.
