Here are the top five stories today in Miami:
1. Jackson Health System welcomed the first baby of 2022 as Bay Milan Enrique Figueredo was born at 12:02 a.m. on New Year's Day at The Women's Hospital at Jackson Memorial. The baby boy weighed 8 lbs. and 3 oz., and is 19.5 inches long. Figueredo was born to Deysi Juarez and Manuel Figueredo, their fourth child. (CBS Miami)
2. The Archdiocese of Miami announced Saturday the temporary reinstatement of the use of masks indoors for all Catholic school employees and students over the age of two, regardless of vaccination status or parental request to waive the requirement. The Archdiocese said the decision comes after a “substantial increase in positive cases per 100,000 persons in the tri-county area in the last four weeks.” (Archdiocese of Miami)
3. A Florida family is seeking answers after a 14-year-old boy, Vensly Maxime, was found dead in a retention pond days after he failed to return home the last day of school before the holiday break in Palm Beach County. (NBC Miami)
4. Broward County voted Friday for masks to remain optional for students and staff, but make masks mandatory for visitors and vendors. The Broward County superintendent has authority to amend the policy. The new policy goes into effect on Monday, January 3rd. (CBS Miami)
5. Authorities are searching for two men after they are suspected of damaging the Southernmost Point buoy in Key West at 3 a.m. on Saturday. Police say the two suspects placed a Christmas tree in front of the landmark and lit it on fire. (WSVN)
