Here are the top five stories today in Miami:
1. Floridians can start their 2022 off positively with First Day Hike at over 175 Florida state parks. First Day Hike is when people around the nation go hiking on January 1st. There are ranger-guided hikes are offered at some state parks for those interested. (Florida Patch)
2. A record week for new COVID-19 cases in Florida continued as the latest data showed 75,962 new cases reported to the Centers for Disease Control from the Sunshine State on Thursday. Demand for testing is also increasing as the virus spreads. (WPLG Local 10)
3. Coral Gables plans to install two to three smart-city poles that incorporate wifi, 5G, CCTV, traffic, environmental and safety sensors this year. The next poles are to be installed on Alhambra Circle, part of the Central Business District where a number of financial institutions are located. (Miami Today)
4. Miami Jewish Film Festival will have a series of silent film screenings taking place from January 17th to January 19th at The Betsy Hotel’s rooftop, 1440 Ocean Dr. in Miami Beach, and will be free for the public. (Sun Sentinel)
5. Realterm Logistics has picked up a fully-leased industrial facility near Miami International Airport for $14.7 million. The seller was ADJ Properties, a Cutler Bay, Florida-based commercial real estate firm managed by David Janney, records show. (The Real Deal)
