This FL Bakery Is One Of The Nation's Best, New York Times Says

Florida has plenty of bakers making breads, confections like Key Lime pie and more. But this bakery is the best, the paper says.

DORAL, FL — Bakeries are an integral part of South Florida's food culture, from pastries to breads, tarts and pies.

But one Florida bakery the New York Times recently listed as one of the best in the nation.

The Times recently published "22 of the Best Bakeries Across the U.S. Right Now."

According to the piece, the nation is seeing "a bakery renaissance is underway, fueled by a convergence of economics, post-Covid restaurant changes, diners’ tastes and the marketing power of social media."

Brian Gallagher for the Times said the baked goods gold rush is led by "former fine-dining pastry chefs and entrepreneurial hobbyists-turned-professionals alike."

Among these bakeries making waves in the food scene is Doral's Caracas Bakery.

Located at 7884 NW 52nd St. in Doral, plus the MiMo (Biscayne) site at 7283 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami, Caracas Bakery is no stranger to food critics. The bakery's Jesus Brazon and Manuel Brazon were finalists for Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker in the James Beard Awards last year.

The bakery has an inventive way with toast — you can try salmon toast, mushroom toast, avocado toast and pan con tomate.

Diners can also sample frittatas, Jambon Beurre Comte (a baguette with ham and cheese), a yogurt bowl, a breakfast platter of sourdough bread, greens and eggs, and more.

Sandwiches include a turkey club; turkey sandwich; broccoli sandwich; a croix sandwich of scrambled eggs, avocado, tomatoes and American cheese on a croissant; and a B.E.C, which is a sweet potato bun filled with soft scrambled eggs, thick-cut bacon and American cheese.

Father Manuel Brazon and son Jesus fled Venezuela and opened their first bakery in Doral, the Miami Herald said.

Here's what New York Times writer Brett Anderson had to say about Caracas Bakery:

You could spend a lazy week traversing greater Miami to learn for yourself what locals already know: that South Florida is home to one of the country’s most dynamic bakery scenes. Or you could just drop by Caracas Bakery. That is where the owner, Jesús Manuel Brazón, above — with the help of his father, Manuel (also a baker), and mother, Scarlet Rojas (a cachito whisperer) — built a local following, particularly among fellow Venezuelan Americans, while honing his Latin approach to viennoserie and French-style bread baking. It all comes together in flaky croissants and pastelitos, golfeados and kouign-amann palmeritas, and a handsome bâtard the menu calls “campesino.” A second location opened in the MiMo District of Miami in 2022; a Coral Gables spot opened earlier this month. The newer bakeries offer seating (unlike the original).

The Doral location is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.
