COCONUT CREEK, FL — A veteran Broward County police officer was shot Saturday morning while two other people and a dog were killed in a domestic dispute that turned violent. A third person was also critically wounded as gunfire pierced a quiet suburban Florida neighborhood.

The wounded officer was identified as Officer Andrew Renna, a four-and-a-half year veteran, who was in stable condition at Broward Health North as of Saturday.

"He was struck with shotgun fire," Chief Albert Arenal of the Creek Police Department told reporters of his officer. "We do know that his right lung was punctured, however he has not required surgery at this point, and he is in ICU being treated. We feel very lucky about his condition and how he is at this time."

The incident happened around 7:05 a.m. in the 4200 block of NW 57th Drive in the Coral Point subdivision when a call went out for a domestic disturbance.

Officer Renna was first on the scene, arriving within 60 seconds.

"When he arrived, his vehicle immediately took rounds from a suspect," said the chief. "They were shotgun rounds fired through the passenger door and passenger window. Multiple shots were fired. Officer Renna accelerated, got out of the area as quickly as he could."

But by then, he had already been wounded. He was met down the street by fellow officers who took him to an ambulance that had been instructed to wait on the perimeter.

Other officers arrived at the scene where the suspected gunman gave himself up. He was identified as 44-year-old Jason Roseman.

"They encountered a white male with a shotgun on the corner of NW 42nd Way and NW 56th Drive," Arenal said of Roseman. "When the suspect was confronted by other officers as we approached the area, he dropped the shotgun and surrendered at that time and was taken into custody."

Police said they found multiple victims in the neighborhood starting with the suspected gunman's home as help poured in from nearby Broward County communities when the call went out that an officer had been shot.

"There is a deceased subject inside, (and) a deceased pit bull that was apparently shot," the chief said. "There was several rifles and ammunition found upstairs."

As police expanded their search into the garage they came upon what appeared to be an improvised explosive device.

"It looked like sticks of dynamite wired together with a circuit board," said the chief. "It looked completely legit, but it was ultimately found to be a prop."

Next door, police found a woman dead in the driveway. Police found a man laying in the driveway of another home. That man was taken to Broward Health North in critical condition.

Police did not immediately release details of what led to the shootings.

"This is a very sad day for Coconut Creek," added Mayor Sandra L. Welch. "For one of our first responders to be injured on the job doing his duty, serving and protecting our community, is just not a good day, and then for those who innocently lost their lives as well, our hearts go out to them."
