1. Thousands of people are in South Florida right now for Miami Art Week. Art Basel is the premiere event in Miami Beach with over 250 galleries on display from 36 countries, featuring artists from around the globe. There are also a number of free and paid events happening all over town through Sunday. (Miami Patch)

2. The first person to contract the omicron variant in the United States has been identified in California, the White House announced Wednesday. The person was a traveler who returned from South Africa on November 22nd and tested positive on November 29th. The infected person has mild symptoms and was fully-vaccinated, but has not received a booster shot. There has been no news about the variant being present in Florida. (WSVN)
3. Need a boost? Art Plug art agency and Superlost Coffee are offering a $1,000 cup of coffee at the UR Special Coffee pop-up at the Bagel Club in Wynwood from now through Sunday. It comes with a certificate of authenticity and a hand screen-printed sack of coffee. (Miami New Times)
4. An effort by Florida Republicans to make Florida’s school board races partisan contests advanced in the state Senate this week. Democrats are concerned about the partisan push after school board members suffered from angry attacks at school board meetings this year. (Florida Politics)
5. A multi-level indoor sports facility called Destination Sport Miami is being planned near the Dolphin Mall and starting construction soon. It will include 2 NHL-sized ice rinks, an NFL-FIFA sized artificial turf field, 18 NBA-sized basketball courts, a 20,000 square foot E-Sports arena, and much more. The cost of the project is estimated at $150 million. (The Next Miami)
