MIAMI, FL — Miami-Dade County Public Schools was one of 24 school districts across Florida that received an A grade Thursday as state education officials released their annual ratings covering the just-ended 2018-2019 school year.

For Miami-Dade, it was the second consecutive year the district has earned an A. In addition, there were no F schools among traditional schools in the district for the third straight year.

“Every member of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools family, indeed, the entire community has great cause to celebrate this historic moment,” said Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. “This achievement resoundingly demonstrates the great commitment of our students, teachers, school and District leaders, and support staff, as well as the inspired leadership of our School Board.”

Broward County Public Schools, the School District of Palm Beach County and Lee County Schools all received B grades though some individual schools in those districts may have received A grades.

Miami-Dade school officials said that 99 percent of all schools in the district received either an A, B or C grade compared to the 95 percent average throughout Florida.

Senior high schools in the district outperformed others statewide with 16 percent receiving A grades compared to 14 percent statewide.

District officials also said Miami-Dade schools also received higher ratings than the state and other large counties when examining the percentage of schools combined across A and B grades as well as across A, B, and C grades.

“I could not be prouder of these school performance results,” said Miami-Dade School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman. “The designation of M-DCPS as an A rated district for the second year in a row speaks volumes about the commitment and dedication to excellence exhibited by every teacher, administrator, support staff person and of course our students and their parents.”

The number of “D” schools was also reduced from five in 2018 to one in 2019. The school was one percentage point away from getting a C grade.

The grading system is based on 11 factors that include student achievement, learning gains statewide, high school graduation rates and standardized tests among others.
