FIU'S DAY OF SERVICE VARIOUS LOCATIONS

On Saturday, Jan. 19 at 8 a.m., more than 300 students will participate in the day of service at locations throughout South Florida. At FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus, 3000 Northeast 151st Street, North Miami, students will assist with bay restoration, planting mangroves and helping endangered species. Students will also visit Pridelines: Miami’s LGBT Community Center, 6360 NE 4th Court, Miami, and the Enchanted Forrest Elaine Gordon Park, 1725 NE 135th Street, North Miami, where they will give the youth lounge a refreshed look and assist cleaning the park, respectively. Additionally, students will contribute to beautification projects at two schools: Miami Edison Senior High School, 6161 NW 5th Court, Miami, and Jesse J. McCrary Jr. Elementary School, 514 NW 77th Street, Miami. To participate, register here.


MLK PARADE, MIAMI

The city of Miami will hold its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Parade on Monday, Jan. 21 in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

The parade is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will end around 4 p.m., according to city officials. It will travel along NW 54th Street from NW 12th Avenue to NW 19th Avenue, then continue west on 54th Street into Miami-Dade County.

Miami police have announced the following street closures ahead of the parade:

  • NW 54th Street will be closed from NW 7th Avenue to NW 19th Avenue. Motorists should use NW 53rd Street to travel on the north side of NW 54th Street and NW 55th Street on the south side.
  • Street closures begin at 7:30 a.m., however, NW 12th Avenue and NW 17th Avenue will remain open in the northbound and southbound direction until 9 a.m. The entire route will be closed to all vehicular traffic starting at 9 a.m.
  • The staging area is from NW 7th to NW 12th Avenue on NW 54th Street. The staging area overflow will use NW 53rd Street (north side) and NW 55th Street (south side) to enter the parade route between NW 7th Avenue and NW 11th Avenue. Residents who live in the area will be allowed access.
  • Miami-Dade Transit buses that travel along NW 54th Street will be rerouted. Check with Miami-Dade Transit for changes to the schedule.
  • Motorists are encouraged to take alternate routes. City of Miami police officers will be stationed along the parade route to provide assistance.
  • Streets are scheduled to reopen in phases starting around 2 p.m. Traffic is expected to be back to normal by about 5 p.m.


MLK DAY OF SERVICE COMMUNITY PAINTING, MIAMI GARDENS

Join Miami Gardens officials at 9 a.m. Monday for a day of painting. The group will meet at Miami Gardens City Hall.
