📰 News we're reading

1. Will my trash be picked up New Year's Day? (miamiherald.com) — If you live in Miami-Dade, your trash and recycling will be picked up on New Year’s Day 2026 as usual, and all county disposal centers will be open normal hours. Only the solid waste administrative offices will be closed, so residents needing help should call 311 or check online before the holiday.

2. Hundreds of marine animals from Miami Seaquarium find new home at Children's Aquarium Dallas (cbsnews.com) — Miami residents should know that hundreds of animals from the long-running Miami Seaquarium, which closed after welfare concerns and bankruptcy, have been moved to Children’s Aquarium Dallas. The transfer follows years of scrutiny over animal care, including after a killer whale’s death, and staff in Dallas say they’ve upgraded systems to give the former Miami animals a safer, permanent home.

3. Driver charged after Florida's Turnpike crash leaves Miami-Dade deputy in critical condition, arrest documents say (cbsnews.com) — A Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputy remains in extreme critical condition after being struck on Florida’s Turnpike while assisting with an earlier crash, and a 28-year-old driver now faces reckless driving and license-related charges. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue airlifted the deputy to HCA Kendall Hospital, and arrest documents say the driver admitted using alcohol and marijuana and was driving on a repeatedly suspended license.

4. Miami 77, Stetson 45 (thefacts.com) — Miami’s women’s basketball team rolled past Stetson 77–45, with balanced scoring from multiple Hurricanes and strong rebounding to move to 9–4 on the season. While the box score is dense, it highlights how Miami controlled the game on both ends of the floor.
