Miami Police Shooting: Suspect In Critical Condition

Miami police said that two officers were involved in a shooting early Sunday morning that left a suspect in critical condition.

MIAMI, FL — Miami police were on the scene of an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning. The incident occurred at 3:33 a.m. in the 5800 block of NW 18 Avenue. Police said that the suspect was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

"The offender was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition via city of Miami Fire Rescue," Officer Chris Bess of the Miami Police Department told Patch.

Bess said that neither of the two officers were injured.

Miami Police Chief Rodolfo Llanes told reporters at the scene that the officers were involved in a foot chase with the suspect prior to the shooting.

"The vehicle was involved in a traffic crash and the subject bailed out, running," he said. "Officers gave chase."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting since it involves city police officers.

"Those officers are heroes," insisted Edward Lugo of the Fraternal Order in an interview with reporters at the scene. "They are here in the middle of the night working, protecting the community and that's what they did."
