📰 News we're reading

1. Complaint by Miami Beach mayor's office led to police visit over Facebook comment (miamiherald.com) — Miami Beach residents are learning that Mayor Steven Meiner’s office alerted police to a resident’s critical Facebook comment, prompting detectives to visit her South Beach home. Police say they acted out of caution amid antisemitism concerns, while the resident and her attorney argue the visit chills free speech and raises questions about how online criticism of city leaders is handled.

2. Hialeah's new mayor moves to tackle sky-high water bills for residents through an executive order (cbsnews.com) — Hialeah’s new mayor has ordered an internal audit to explain why city residents pay far more for water and sewer than other Miami-Dade customers, with some bills topping $1,000. The review will examine aging meters and an $18 million dispute with Miami-Dade County, with options to lower bills expected within about three months.

3. Store owner irate after customer pulls tire iron on clerk over AirPods, MDSO deputy gives him the finger (wsvn.com) — A North Miami cell phone shop owner says a customer threatened a clerk with a tire iron during a dispute over AirPods, then was brought back inside by responding Miami-Dade Sheriff’s deputies instead of being detained. The owner has filed a formal complaint after surveillance video appeared to show a deputy giving him the middle finger, prompting an internal affairs investigation.

4. Immigrant detainee at "Alligator Alcatraz" agrees to leave US, asks that lawsuit be dismissed (cbsnews.com) — A federal judge in Miami previously ordered an Everglades immigration detention center to wind down operations over environmental review concerns, though that ruling is on hold. Now one detainee’s lawsuit has ended after he agreed to leave the U.S., while two other legal challenges over the facility’s operations and attorney access are still moving forward.
