Environmentally Friendly Businesses Highlighted at Earth Day Event

The New Port Richey Environmental Committee's Earth Day function sought to generate awareness of the local businesses working toward a sustainable community.

Press release from Marilynn DeChant

The City of New Port Richey’s Environmental Committee hosted an Earth Day Event on Saturday, April 21,  in the courtyard between City Hall and the New Port Richey Public Library in downtown New Port Richey and managed to miss the downpour that arrived later that afternoon.

Project Managers for the event were  Kira Atkinson and her sister Kacey Atkinson, both members of the Environmental Committee. The purpose of the event was to help generate awareness of the local businesses working toward a sustainable community and to acknowledge the annual Earth Day event that has taken place in the country since its inception in April 1970.  Several vendors also provide education to the public about the environment and sustainability. Many the people who attended on Saturday either walked or rode bicycles.

Some of the vendors included Code Green Community, Solar Independence, Bill’s Bees, Ecology Florida, Career Central, Going Green Tampa, Ecology Florida and many more. A variety of native plants were for sale, recycled art, honey and Dave Eichenberger  provided ambient music during the event. The Friends of the Library also held a book sale upstairs in the library.

Several City Council members also attended the event. “We were happy to see them there,” said committee chair, Marilynn deChant. “The best part about what we do as a city committee is to find creative ways to promote community without it costing the city.  We were able to put on this entire event today without it costing the city a cent.”

Sponsorships and small fundraisers brought in the money the committee needed to organize and produce a successful Earth Day event that not only brings people together but provides helpful information about how to be a part of a sustainable society.

The Environment Committee of the City of New Port Richey is comprised of city residents and business owners.  It meets on the fourth Monday every month at 5 p.m. upstairs in the Library.
