You may be wondering what all this talk about Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall potentially breaking off from the city really means to you — the person who just wants to see a good show at a good price.

Van Wezel is in talks with the city to restructure, and the most attractive option is to become an independent operation supported by the current Van Wezel Foundation. It would remain a non-profit.

Here's what the city said is the most attractive alternative:

"Consolidate the operation of the Van Wezel Hall with the Van Wezel Foundation under a long term lease arrangement whereby the non- profit entity would carry the authority and responsibility for governance, operations, all expenses and fundraising."

If the city and Van Wezel can agree on a plan, whatever it might be, the two sides hope to implement it by Jan. 1, 2013, according to a press release issued by the city.

It's the fundraising that's key, said Executive Director Mary Bensel, because it would be easier to do. The hall has already installed seats, , and with the help of more fundraising, hopes to one day install new chillers, a main drape, new carpeting, improved bathrooms and one day a restaurant, she said.

The way the hall books shows will not change, she said. You can read how the hall books shows on Van Wezel's blog.

"My main goal is keeping the theater viable and also program for a wide variety of people," she said.
