Two People Killed Over Weekend Increases City's Homicides To 30: Police

Detectives have begun investigating two separate killings that occurred within 24 hours of each other in St. Petersburg Saturday.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A second person has been killed over the weekend in St. Petersburg at a boxing event in the back parking lot of the Skyway Plaza Saturday night, St. Petersburg police said.

A transient man also died Sunday from being beaten to death in between 73rd Street South and Park Street Saturday night, investigators said. Authorities told a Patch reporter that this pushes the number of St. Pete's homicides to 30 for 2021.

Approximately 200 people gathered near the temporary outdoor boxing ring. A fight occurred between two groups, and then several shots were fired, investigators said. Two men and two women were also taken to local hospitals with gunshot injuries. A fifth victim who died at the hospital, 21-year-old Trevon Montrell Barton, authorities said.

Detectives arrested a Robert Lee Cooley, 21, on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm and discharge of firearm in public.
