ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The St. Petersburg City Council approved Thursday resolutions to begin repairs to Tropicana Field’s roof, which was destroyed by Hurricane Milton in 2024.

The council approved $23 million for the stadium’s repairs. This amount will cover the cost of fabrication, delivery and installation of a polytetrafluoroethylene roof membrane, a news release from the city said.

The city is obligated to make repairs to the stadium so that it’s suitable for Tampa Bay Rays home games again.

After Thursday’s approval by city council, manufacturing will begin for the roof material, the city said.

Roof replacement is expected to be completed by December 2025. Once the roof replacement is completed, the city will make plans to begin interior repairs and turf installation. All stadium repairs are currently scheduled to be complete by April 2026.

On Dec. 12, city council approved a design-build agreement to provide pre-construction phase services for the Tropicana Field Emergency Roof Replacement Project. Thursday’s approval allows city contractors to move into the construction phase of the project, officials said.

Now that roof repairs are approved, this summer, councilors will vote on four interior repair packages. The four interior repair packages will include: metal panel repair/replacement, sports lighting, low-voltage/audio/visual, and architectural/mechanical/baseball-specific items, including drywall, flooring, cabinetry, isolated mechanical, turf, and clay netting.
